SUMMARY:Decreasing Polarization through Deep Democracy at the ACR Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Association for Conflict Resolution annual conference! \nPolarization isn’t just for politics. Across the US and the world\, people are managing differences by dividing into us versus them camps. Some of this is good-natured (think sports teams)\, but much of it devolves into name-calling\, oversimplification of issues\, and demonization of the other side. \nDeep Democracy\, a method of conflict resolution developed in South Africa to support the transition away from apartheid\, was designed to help transform destructive polarization. In this interactive workshop\, participants will learn the Deep Democracy approach to interrupting polarization both through presentation and an experiential activity in which we use Deep Democracy techniques to address a polarity present within the group or conference. \nFor more information and registration: https://acrnet.org/page/2024conf

SUMMARY:Interrupting the Path to Violence: Using Deep Democracy to Identify and Mitigate Precursors to Violence
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Frontiers of Democracy conference! \nViolence doesn’t just happen. There are often warning signs that appear long before a situation erupts. All too often\, we don’t pay attention to these warning signs. We brush them off\, discount them\, or otherwise ignore them. Other times\, we see the warning signs\, but hesitate to intervene out of fear of making something bigger than it is\, lack of confidence in our skills\, or worries about ruining relationships. Our avoidance can backfire as tension grows and leads to separation or violence. \nIn this session\, we will explore the Resistance Line\, a tool developed by the Lewis Method of Deep Democracy\, and use it to help us diagnose and intervene before conflicts become intractable. The Lewis Method of Deep Democracy was created by Myrna and Greg Lewis to help South African companies and individuals recover and heal from the traumatic legacy of apartheid. The Lewis Method of Deep Democracy offers concrete\, proven methods that support effective decision-making\, problem-solving\, and conflict resolution. The techniques surface undercurrents\, engage all voices\, and work through differences to find resolutions to seemingly impossible-to-solve issues.

SUMMARY:Emotions Welcome!: Deep Democracy's Approach to Conflict Resolution
DESCRIPTION:       \nPresented by: Maya Townsend; Ipek Utun \nMany conflict resolution methods assume that people are logical\, rational human beings. We are. But we’re also emotional\, irrational\, and sometimes unpredictable. The Lewis Deep Democracy technique is designed to engage the entire human being — their logic and their emotion\, their rationality\, and their irrationality — in the conflict resolution process.

SUMMARY:The Lewis Method of Deep Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Is it possible to stay in dialogue around emotionally charged topics in ways that energize\, create shifts in consciousness\, and evoke new ideas for action? SUMMARY:Stuck in your point of view? Let’s talk!
DESCRIPTION:In our current environment\, characterized by oppositional discourse\, it is useful to pause and explore the human tendency to dismiss conflicting points of views and get “stuck” in our own point of view. In this highly experiential workshop\, we work with the notions of neutrality\, equanimity\, polarities\, and role theory\, drawn from the Lewis Method of Deep Democracy\, to explore how to listen to viewpoints that are radically different from our own. Participants will be introduced to effective approaches for working with divisive issues that have the potential to fracture a group and undermine effective leadership. \nPresenters: Martha Miser\, Lauren Powers\, Maya Townsend\, Ipek Utun \nDetails: Coming soon

SUMMARY:From Commitment and Action: Uncovering and Addressing Hidden Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Too often\, employees learn that the politically sound choice is to agree—even if they don’t. Concerns go under the surface and important viewpoints aren’t discussed. Occasionally\, concerns become conflicts so large that they threaten to divide a team or undermine a project. \nIn this online\, on-demand session\, participants will learn about the Resistance Line\, which helps diagnose and address hidden resistance. This technique is an outgrowth of the Deep Democracy methodology\, which was developed in South Africa after the fall of apartheid to help organizations recover from the legacy of racism. We will also discuss how to intervene when there is tension in teams and how to prevent tensions from erupting into harmful conflict. \n2021 HBA Annual Conference: Registration\nMembers or Employees of Corporate Partners: $425 (Aug 28 to Oct 22) / $525 (Oct 23 to Nov 12)\nNon-Members: $600 (Aug 28 to Oct 22) / $700 (Oct 23 to Nov 12)

SUMMARY:Change\, Undone: How to Work with Top Leaders to Make Change Stick - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:The change is great\, the change is amazing… and then the change is canceled. Gutted. Undone. It’s a situation that happens far too often. Many times\, the cause for calling a halt is executive leadership. They may cite a change in strategy\, a shift in priorities\, or a response to environmental conditions\, but the underlying reality is constant: they didn’t believe in the change in the first place. \nIn this session\, we examine how practitioners can work with sponsors and company executives to prevent change from becoming undone. We investigate the forces that cause top leaders to push back and explore a reality-based method of working with the inevitable trade-offs involved in change. Participants leave with a clearer plan for how to work with executives to support their initiatives.

SUMMARY:Need Resilience? Look to Your Networks
DESCRIPTION:One constant throughout tumultuous 2020 has been change. Organizations have been faced with unprecedented challenges that have forced them to rethink\, retrench\, rejigger\, and revitalize. One more “re” word has been necessary: resilience. The traumas of the past year have wounded individuals and organizations and made even more evident the need for resiliency. \nIn this session\, we will focus on where resiliency lives in organizations: in their networks. Networks are the webs of informal relationships that people create in order to complete routine work\, make decisions\, solve problems\, and respond to changing conditions. They are more flexible and agile than organizational hierarchies and better prepared to respond to change. We will discuss how participants can leverage the power of networks to support strategy formulation and implementation.

SUMMARY:Our Organizations are Networks: Why Don't We Use Them for Communication and Leadership?
DESCRIPTION:Now an online event! \nAlmost every organization now relies on communication networks to share information and mobilize collective action. Yet leaders rarely take a thoughtful\, planful approach to leveraging networks. In this workshop\, we will learn how to use networks to support effective communication and change. \nThis workshop covers three topics: \n\nThe Networked Organization. A healthy networked organization has certain qualities. How healthy is your organization? Learn about the shifts needed to develop a robust\, productive networked organization.\nCommunication in the Networked World. Communication worked differently before organizations were networked. Now that they are\, you need to understand networks and the tricks to accelerating change within them.\nUsing Network Maps to Strengthen Communication. Network maps provide a snapshot of how information flows within an organization. We’ll look at a map collectively and learn how to interpret it and use the findings to fine-tune a communication initiative.\n\nJoin me at this online conference!

SUMMARY:When Conflict Overwhelms Change: What To Do When Groups Get Stuck
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nConflict is inevitable. And conflicts in today’s organizations\, in which people are expected to change so quickly\, are even more common. Unfortunately\, often conflict in organizations is avoided or swept under the rug. Occasionally\, a conflict becomes so large that it threatens to rip apart a team\, create an unpleasant working environment\, or reduce productivity. \nBut it doesn’t have to be destructive. Within conflict\, there is often very important information seeking expression. A change leader’s ability to allow that information to emerge and successfully navigate through conflict is the gateway to the success of teams\, change initiatives\, and organizations. \nIn this interactive session\, participants gain exposure to and experience with a technique that they can use with groups facing conflict. Participants will learn how to use the technique to help people talk respectfully and productively about conflict. \nMaya Townsend\nFounder / Lead Consultant\, Partnering Resources \n\nMaya Townsend\, founder and lead consultant at Partnering Resources\, helps individuals\, teams\, and organizations thrive in our networked world. She uses knowledge of the art and science of networks to help leaders create a resilient strategy\, find opportunities in complex business ecosystems\, and influence change. SUMMARY:Spreading Like Fire: Using Networks to Streamline and Accelerate Change Communication
DESCRIPTION:The IABC World Conference is a global professional development event designed for communication practitioners. Our theme for the upcoming IABC World Conference\, 11-14 June 2017\, is GLOBAL BUSINESS: Lead Communication\, Make Real Impact. \nIn this presentation\, learn why large-scale change is notoriously difficult to achieve. Well-designed\, seamlessly executed change communications are a critical driver. However\, it’s difficult to send consistent messages and maintain momentum over the long haul. Luckily\, organizations have a hidden asset that can be used to support change. \n\nEvery organization consists of webs of relationships: connections people instinctively create in order to solve problems\, share information\, and get things done. Five to fifteen percent of these people are Critical Connectors—people with disproportionate influence over the whole. Once communication professionals identify Critical Connectors\, they can position them and engage with them in ways that can streamline activity and accelerate communication throughout the whole organization. This workshop will introduce participants to network analysis and help participants understand how they can start leveraging Critical Connectors today. \nIn this session\, you’ll learn:[unordered_list style=”bullet”] \n\n5–15% of people in any network have disproportionate influence.\nCritical Connectors include SMEs\, influencers\, informal leaders\, and communicators.\nBy tapping Critical Connectors\, communications professionals can streamline change communication.\nHow one company used network analysis to develop targeted\, resource-efficient communications.\n\n[/unordered_list] \nJoin us in Washington\, DC for this engaging\, participatory workshop!

SUMMARY:The Next Frontier in Change Management: Using Network Analysis to Find Influencers\, Populate Change Teams\, and Create Social Systems that Support Change
DESCRIPTION:Behind organization charts and process maps are relationships. People instinctively form relationships on every job in order to solve problems\, imagine new approaches\, make decisions\, access expertise\, and complete daily work. These relationships comprise organizational networks\, powerful but often overlooked vehicles for change. \nIn this presentation at the 2017 Association of Change Management Professionals conference\, participants will learn how network knowledge can help accelerate success and build support for change. We will discuss how thoughtful use of Critical Connectors—the 5 – 15% of individuals who have disproportionate influence over the network as a whole—can help change management professionals populate teams\, build social support\, and integrate respected change advocates into the organization. \nWe will discuss three case studies. The presenter will share how a large city agency used networks to identify influencers and how Bayer CropScience used networks to prioritize change leadership agendas. Then participants will engage in their choice of two case studies and explore how they would use network information to support change management in their chosen situation. We will close with Q&A and discussion of next steps. \nMissed the session? Check out the ACMP Next Frontier Slides.

SUMMARY:Lessons from Mapping the Nonprofit Talent Ecosystem: Finding the Talent You Need
DESCRIPTION:Nonprofits struggle to find the talent they need. It can feel like an isolated problem\, but there are larger forces affecting the influx and recruitment of talent in the nonprofit sector. Ecosystem mapping offers a way to see the whole system and find leverage points for change. It’s an easy-to-learn\, participatory method of building a holistic picture of a system that can then be used for analysis and discovery. In this workshop\, participants learn the basics of ecosystem mapping and apply the method in order to understand the challenges affecting talent in the nonprofit sector. Through an experiential activity\, we will explore the nonprofit talent ecosystem and gain new insights into potential levers to pull in order to affect change. \nFor conference information\, see: \nhttp://massnonprofitnet.org/training-and-events/annual-conference/

SUMMARY:Navigating Global Complexity: How Bayer Used Organization Network Analysis to Build a Connected\, Collaborative Organization
DESCRIPTION:Complexity is increasing. Leaders struggle to bring alignment and focus among the intricate interconnections\, profound diversity\, and local demands pulling on staff around the globe. Organizations require new tools to realize the true benefits of globalization\, collaboration\, and shared resources. \nOne such tool is organization network analysis (ONA). Based on a case study with a client seeking to become a global organization\, this session will help OD practitioners understand how what it takes to become an effective networked leader and manage the complexity of dispersed individuals and teams. Through experiential activities designed to encourage network thinking\, participants will rethink how leaders design\, shape\, and nurture talent within a global network. \nSpecifically\, participants will learn: \n\nThe value of using ONA to build connection and collaboration across global organizations.\nHow to increase organizations’ potential to recognize those actually doing the work well\, not just those who fit cultural expectations and who have leadership exposure.\nThrough a case study\, demonstrate how leaders can transform from transactional leaders to networked leaders in a global organization.\nHow network maps can be used to help coach leaders and better engage virtual team members.\n\nPresented with Kittie Watson of Innolect\, Inc. and Lisa Coen\, former public affairs leader at Bayer CropScience.

SUMMARY:Six Strategies for Making Change Stick (Hint: Connections Matter)
DESCRIPTION:Leaders of middle-market companies face lofty challenges: how to sustain growth\, how to lead significant change\, how to capture ideas and turn them into competitive wins. You can’t tackle these alone. At Build’s high-impact\, day-long event you will huddle with fellow leaders of middle market companies for an insider perspective on challenges … and road-tested solutions. Expect unparalleled networking\, highly interactive sessions\, key actionable takeaways\, and an afternoon cocktail party! \nMaya Townsend of Partnering Resources will present on Six Strategies for Making Change Stick (HINT: Connections Matter!): \nChallenge: To get better\, we have to evolve — but only 38% of leaders say their change efforts have actually improved performance. Why is it so tough to win buy-in and make change stick? \nSolution: Change by dictum doesn’t work. The only thing that does: connections\, and lots of them. Studies show that effective change makers simultaneously employ these six strategies for building the individual\, social\, and structural connections that make transformation excite — and\, therefore\, take hold within — an organization.

SUMMARY:Process Improvement for the New Millennium: Introduction to Value Network Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Business processes are more complex than ever before. Project Managers need to understand them well in order to write requirements\, design solutions\, and make improvements. Yet\, rapidly changing\, exception-based\, complex processes stymie traditional process mapping efforts. The Value Network Analysis (VNA) methodology is well suited to showing how processes produce value. Sometimes considered the ideal process mapping tool for the complexity era\, VNA excels at identifying and analyzing non-linear\, dynamic processes. VNA also effectively maps business ecosystems: a dynamic structure of interconnected organizations that depend on each other for mutual survival. \nIn this workshop\, featured at the 2013 Professional Development Day sponsored by the Project Management Institute Massachusetts Bay Chapter\, participants will learn: \n\nWhy processes should be thought of as networks\nThe gaps and challenges with traditional business process mapping\nHow VNA methodology can help simplify and enrich business process improvement\nThe basic components of a VNA map\nIdeas to enhance future process improvement and mapping efforts\n\nUPDATE: This session will be presented by Partnering Resources Associate Cheryl Coonahan.

SUMMARY:Becoming a Change Leader at the HBA Leadership Conference
DESCRIPTION:The statistics on change leadership are dismal. McKinsey Quarterly reported that only 38% of leaders believed their recent transformation effort was better than somewhat successful. And the project success rates (coming in on time\, within budget\, and to scope) are lower than anyone would like. Clearly\, there’s room for improvement. In this engaging\, participatory session\, participants learn what it takes to provide successful change leadership. Specifically\, we will discuss: \n\nThe one method that makes a change initiative 10 times more likely to succeed.\nThe six ways of creating change in organizations.\nHow leaders can use the six ways to help create change.\nHow leaders can choose the best fit for their projects or initiatives. Participants will leave with new ideas\, tips and techniques\, and an action plan for becoming more effective change leaders.\n\nJoin us at the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association Annual Leadership Conference on November 9\, 2012 in Orlando\, FL! \nSlides Posted!\nThanks for all who attended the session and thanks for the kudos.
