SUMMARY:Working with Resistance: A Deep Democracy Approach
DESCRIPTION:As facilitators\, our job is to help diverse groups come together\, engage in dialogues that encourage positive collaboration across differences\, enable groups to overcome resistance\, access more of the wisdom inherent in the system\, and craft solutions that stick. Resistance is a dynamic that slows down or sometimes even blocks the system from moving toward a decision.  \nIn this session\, participants learn about the Lewis Deep Democracy\, which was developed in South Africa after the fall of apartheid to help organizations recover from the legacy of racism. We will share a tool to diagnose resistance in a system. We will focus our attention on our inner systems and reflect on where we are with resistance. We will search for the answer to “what is needed to work with resistance” by using self as a fractal of the systems we work with.  \nParticipants will gain a tool for diagnosing resistance as well as deeper insight into the dynamics of resistance in themselves and in groups. \nLearning Objectives  \nIn this session\, participants will: \n\n\nLearn a tool to diagnose if everything is said in a group: The Resistance Line\nGain insight into personal Resistance Line Behavior\nGain Deeper awareness about a current resistance one is having\n\n\nNOTE: This workshop will be recorded for distribution to all who register (breakout rooms will not be recorded). \nPresenters: Maya Townsend and Ipek Utun

SUMMARY:Decreasing Polarization through Deep Democracy at the ACR Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Association for Conflict Resolution annual conference! \nPolarization isn’t just for politics. Across the US and the world\, people are managing differences by dividing into us versus them camps. Some of this is good-natured (think sports teams)\, but much of it devolves into name-calling\, oversimplification of issues\, and demonization of the other side. \nDeep Democracy\, a method of conflict resolution developed in South Africa to support the transition away from apartheid\, was designed to help transform destructive polarization. In this interactive workshop\, participants will learn the Deep Democracy approach to interrupting polarization both through presentation and an experiential activity in which we use Deep Democracy techniques to address a polarity present within the group or conference. \nFor more information and registration: https://acrnet.org/page/2024conf

SUMMARY:Interrupting the Path to Violence: Using Deep Democracy to Identify and Mitigate Precursors to Violence
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Frontiers of Democracy conference! \nViolence doesn’t just happen. There are often warning signs that appear long before a situation erupts. All too often\, we don’t pay attention to these warning signs. We brush them off\, discount them\, or otherwise ignore them. Other times\, we see the warning signs\, but hesitate to intervene out of fear of making something bigger than it is\, lack of confidence in our skills\, or worries about ruining relationships. Our avoidance can backfire as tension grows and leads to separation or violence. \nIn this session\, we will explore the Resistance Line\, a tool developed by the Lewis Method of Deep Democracy\, and use it to help us diagnose and intervene before conflicts become intractable. The Lewis Method of Deep Democracy was created by Myrna and Greg Lewis to help South African companies and individuals recover and heal from the traumatic legacy of apartheid. The Lewis Method of Deep Democracy offers concrete\, proven methods that support effective decision-making\, problem-solving\, and conflict resolution. The techniques surface undercurrents\, engage all voices\, and work through differences to find resolutions to seemingly impossible-to-solve issues.

SUMMARY:The Human-Centered Organization: OD's Role in Bringing Radical Humanity to the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Maya Townsend \nIn November 2022\, an international group of business leaders and thinkers asked: “What are organizations centered around?” The answers were telling: Leaders. Operations. Profit. Customers. Managers. Money. Notably missing from the list were purpose\, human well-being\, learning\, and growth. \nMany of today’s organizations replicate the Taylorist model\, which believes employees are tools to be used\, not human beings with ideas\, energy\, needs\, or rights. What would our organizations look like if we treated people as unique and valuable? If we conceived of people as our most valuable source of organizational energy and contribution rather than a cost to be managed? \nThe field of OD is grounded in humanistic values. Many of us strive to help our clients become more just\, democratic\, and collaborative. In this session\, participants will: \n\nExplore what organizations would look like if we truly centered our businesses around human dignity\, learning\, and well-being.\nConsider/learn the impacts of human centering on practices such as appraising performance\, hiring\, onboarding\, and managing.\nLeave with new ideas and inspiration for OD’s role in developing vibrant\, energized\, human-centered organizations.

SUMMARY:Emotions Welcome!: Deep Democracy's Approach to Conflict Resolution
DESCRIPTION:       \nPresented by: Maya Townsend; Ipek Utun \nMany conflict resolution methods assume that people are logical\, rational human beings. We are. But we’re also emotional\, irrational\, and sometimes unpredictable. The Lewis Deep Democracy technique is designed to engage the entire human being — their logic and their emotion\, their rationality\, and their irrationality — in the conflict resolution process.

SUMMARY:Racial Justice Community of Practice: The Deep Democracy Approach
DESCRIPTION:Conversations about racial justice often involve hearing viewpoints that differ from your own\, and have the potential to evoke deep emotions. One approach to facilitating such conversations is called Deep Democracy\, a method developed in South Africa during the transition from apartheid to democracy. We’ll hear from two Deep Democracy practitioners\, Maya Townsend & İpek Ütün\, and discuss how the method’s basic principles of ensuring everyone can say what they think\, and hear from others who disagree with them\, lends itself to the tough conversations we need to have around racial equity and justice. \nPlease note that this is for MAFN members only and there is limited space\, so please register early.\n \nOur guiding principles are: \n\n\nCome open to learning (growth mindset)\nNot expert led- hosted by peers with space to learn from all\nBring your questions\, share your expertise\n\n\nONLINE CoP Discussion REMINDERS \n\nIf you register and cannot attend\, please cancel to allow someone else to come. \nRegistration closes at midnight the day before the discussion group.\nRegistered participants will receive instructions for joining the live session and any additional details 1 day in advance and the morning of the event. Please be sure to look for the link in your email.\nMAFN CoP discussions will not be recorded in order to support space for learning.\nFor registration or membership questions contact info@mafn.org.

SUMMARY:Deep Democracy and Organization Development: A New Approach to Resistance and Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:The idea that every consulting project will go smoothly\, without a bit of conflict\, is a lovely dream. But it’s just that: a dream. Whenever people come together to share expertise\, design something\, or implement a plan\, we encounter differences\, yet people at work are not adept at creating healthy spaces to explore opposing points of view. \nFrequently\, one point of view wins while other views go underneath the surface and turn into resistance. Unfortunately\, these voices of resistance often represent those who hold lower positional power in our organizations\, who belong to groups that have been marginalized within the United States\, or who simply represent ways of thinking—voices that are desperately needed in order to sustain resilient\, flexible\, and agile organizations. Many times\, organizational leaders find out too late that there was truth in what the voices of resistance had to say and regret not understanding this truth sooner. As OD practitioners\, we have many tools that can help people have conversations in productive ways. \nIn this session\, we will introduce participants to the Lewis Method of Deep Democracy\, a methodology created in South Africa to help organizations recover from the trauma of apartheid and develop equitable organizations. Deep Democracy uses a group-as-a-whole perspective to help shift participants away from individualistic blaming and shaming to collective explorations of what is valued\, important\, and necessary. The tools are simple enough to be learned quickly. They can be used for a range of situations from light\, cognitive differences of opinion to deep\, emotional conflicts in values. Please join us if you are interested in adding a new tool to your toolkit for working with resistance\, change\, conflict\, and collaboration. \nA recording will be sent to attendees following the webinar\, and will be available for on-demand purchase within three business days. \nFee\nOD Network Members: $25\nNon-Members: $45 \nSHRM Professional Development Credits \nOD Network is recognized by SHRM to offer Professional Development Credits (PDCs) for the SHRM-CP℠ or SHRM-SCP℠. SUMMARY:Stuck in your point of view? Let’s talk!
DESCRIPTION:In our current environment\, characterized by oppositional discourse\, it is useful to pause and explore the human tendency to dismiss conflicting points of views and get “stuck” in our own point of view. In this highly experiential workshop\, we work with the notions of neutrality\, equanimity\, polarities\, and role theory\, drawn from the Lewis Method of Deep Democracy\, to explore how to listen to viewpoints that are radically different from our own. Participants will be introduced to effective approaches for working with divisive issues that have the potential to fracture a group and undermine effective leadership. \nPresenters: Martha Miser\, Lauren Powers\, Maya Townsend\, Ipek Utun \nDetails: Coming soon

SUMMARY:Deep Democracy Group Practice for Facilitators
DESCRIPTION:Invest in your Deep Democracy skills through this four-part\, small group practice and coaching series. We will build on the Deep Democracy Foundations course. During four 90-minute sessions\, you will: \n\nPractice and refine the skills learned in the Deep Democracy Foundations course\nReceive feedback on Deep Democracy techniques\nLearn new Deep Democracy tools that enhance facilitator effectiveness\nIntegrate Deep Democracy techniques into your existing practice\n\nFeedback from Past Participants \n“I am so glad that I took the Practice and Coaching sessions. These sessions were important to solidifying the learning offered in the Level 1 course. The only way to learn facilitation skills is to practice and practice some more and getting to do that in a small group… gave me more confidence in implementing the techniques.” – Lisa Negsted\, Negsted Consulting\, Minnesota \n“The sessions after the training were a really great opportunity to revisit what we had learnt in a safe and supportive space. We could show up with our doubts and insecurities knowing we would have a chance to practise and connect more deeply with our colleagues. It was very useful\, fun and touching. I look forward to more!” – Roxane Loiseaux\, Questhills LTD\, UK \nCourse Length: Four 90-minute sessions.\nDates: TBD based on participant availability \nSign up now!

SUMMARY:What If We Loved Conflict?: How Deep Democracy Invites Healthy Conflict At Work
DESCRIPTION:The idea that every consulting project will go smoothly\, without a bit of conflict\, is a lovely dream. But it’s just that: a dream. Whenever people come together to share opinions\, design something\, or implement a plan\, we inevitably run into differences in perspectives\, values\, priorities\, worldviews\, and so on. These differences\, especially if they revolve around an important issue for us\, generate conflict. Our patterns of dealing with conflict in unhealthy\, non-generative ways compel us to envision a “no-conflict” environment. However\, what if we learned how to work with conflict in ways that are energizing\, inspiring\, and creative? What if we learned that conflict could bring more wisdom to our meeting\, projects\, and relationships? \nIn this session\, we will introduce participants to Deep Democracy\, a methodology created in South Africa to help organizations recover from the trauma of apartheid and develop equitable organizations and healthy relations. We will learn about the principles of Deep Democracy\, experience a core Deep Democracy tool\, and together explore a critical question: is it possible to love conflict? \nBIOS \nIpek Utun \n \nHer passion is to contribute to a world where people dare and commit to live and lead with their full potential\, with love and strength. Ipek is an ICF-certified PCC level Coach\, ORSCC Certified Relationship and Systems Coach\, Certified Shadow Work Group Facilitator and Personal Coach\, and Certified Deep Democracy Facilitator\, Trainer\, and Elder. She has extensive experience in coaching and training C-level executives\, senior leadership teams\, women leadership groups as well as facilitating small to big group processes which hold an emotional charge\, polarization\, and divisiveness. Ipek’s differentiating edge is her capacity to work with the deeper patterns driving complex situations and enabling personal or systemic transformation. \nMaya Townsend \n \nShe brings diverse groups together to tackle complex\, systemic challenges. SUMMARY:An Introduction to Deep Democracy: A New View into Resistance and Conflict
DESCRIPTION:As facilitators\, our job is to help diverse groups come together\, negotiate differences\, and craft solutions that stick. Too often\, however\, group members nod their heads\, but don’t really agree. Their concerns go under the surface. Occasionally\, these concerns become conflicts so large that they threaten to divide a team or undermine a project. In order to achieve real commitment—and to create spaces in which people can disagree and share divergent perspectives safely—we need new methods and tools. \nIn this session\, participants learn about the Lewis Method of Deep Democracy\, which was developed in South Africa after the fall of apartheid to help organizations recover from the legacy of racism. We will share three Deep Democracy tools: a facilitator-friendly method for surfacing differences in a group\, a tool for diagnosing resistance\, and a method for working with conflict. \nAfterwards\, if time permits\, we may have time for open discussion and networking. \nLearning Objectives\nIn this session\, participants will: \n\nLearn how a Conversation in Motion can surface perspectives and uncover hidden issues\nUse the Resistance Line to identify and diagnose hidden resistance\nPractice the Debate tool for leading a group safely through a conflict\n\nSpeakers\nMaya Townsend brings diverse groups together to tackle complex\, systemic challenges. SUMMARY:Change\, Undone: How to Work with Top Leaders to Make Change Stick - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:The change is great\, the change is amazing… and then the change is canceled. Gutted. Undone. It’s a situation that happens far too often. Many times\, the cause for calling a halt is executive leadership. They may cite a change in strategy\, a shift in priorities\, or a response to environmental conditions\, but the underlying reality is constant: they didn’t believe in the change in the first place. \nIn this session\, we examine how practitioners can work with sponsors and company executives to prevent change from becoming undone. We investigate the forces that cause top leaders to push back and explore a reality-based method of working with the inevitable trade-offs involved in change. Participants leave with a clearer plan for how to work with executives to support their initiatives.

SUMMARY:Need Resilience? Look to Your Networks
DESCRIPTION:One constant throughout tumultuous 2020 has been change. Organizations have been faced with unprecedented challenges that have forced them to rethink\, retrench\, rejigger\, and revitalize. One more “re” word has been necessary: resilience. The traumas of the past year have wounded individuals and organizations and made even more evident the need for resiliency. \nIn this session\, we will focus on where resiliency lives in organizations: in their networks. Networks are the webs of informal relationships that people create in order to complete routine work\, make decisions\, solve problems\, and respond to changing conditions. They are more flexible and agile than organizational hierarchies and better prepared to respond to change. We will discuss how participants can leverage the power of networks to support strategy formulation and implementation.

SUMMARY:Deep Democracy: First Aid for Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Disagreements often are avoided or swept under the rug in organizations. Occasionally\, disagreements become conflicts so large that they threaten to divide a team\, create a toxic working environment\, or undermine a project. \nConflict doesn’t have to be destructive. It is both common and inevitable. With skill and awareness\, we can use conflict to develop deeper understandings\, uncover unexamined assumptions\, and reveal hidden wisdom. \nIn this session\, we will introduce participants to First Aid for Polarization. This technique\, an outgrowth of the Deep Democracy method\, allows people to engage in one-on-one conversations about tensions\, differences of opinion\, and divisive issues—political or work-related. We will learn the method and then practice it. Participants will leave with the ability to engage in First Aid for Conflict with the people in their lives as well as with work colleagues and clients. \nTakeaways \n\nUnderstanding of the Resistance Line\, a tool for diagnosing conflict\nAbility to lower the waterline and identify underlying dynamics contributing to conflict\nPractice using the First Aid for Conflict method to engage in 1:1 conversations about differences of opinion\, disagreements\, and divisive conflicts\n\nFacilitators: Maya Townsend and Lauren Powers

Trust plays a key role in how your organization adapts to the “new normal” and how the crisis will affect the engagement and productivity of your people. \nHowever\, building and strengthening trusting relationships among your employees has never been more important than now. Use this interactive opportunity to learn how to navigate the uncertainties and nurture a productive and constructive organization – one that will continue to provide value and have a positive social impact on the world. \nPartnering Resources founder Maya Townsend will present “Stop Fighting Fires\, Start Shifting Patterns: Using Network Knowledge to Shape Change.” The session will ask: \n\nHow can we see beyond events to the network patterns that influence change?\nHow can we use network knowledge to influence change more effectively?\n\nThe session will be followed by a panel discussion in which Maya and other presenters will discuss how to use networks to support change.

SUMMARY:A New View into Change Leadership: Leveraging the Power of Networks
DESCRIPTION:More information coming soon!\n \nLeaders intuitively know that informal influencers can help make or break a change effort. However\, the change management profession doesn’t yet have a clearly articulated\, well-practiced methodology for identifying influencers or using network strategies to support change. In this technology-powered workshop\, we build network intelligence while learning a simple tool for mapping and analyzing organizational networks and influencers. \nThis workshop covers two topics: \n\nChange in the Networked World. Change worked differently before organizations were deeply networked. Now that they are\, you need to understand networks and the tricks to accelerating change within them.\nUnlocking the Wisdom in Network Maps to Support Change. Network maps provide a snapshot of how information flows within an organization. We’ll look at a map collectively and learn how to interpret it and use the findings to fine-tune a change initiative.\n\nJoin me online for this on-demand session!

Yet leaders rarely take a thoughtful\, planful approach to leveraging networks. In this workshop\, we will learn how to use networks to support effective communication and change. \nThis workshop covers three topics: \n\nThe Networked Organization. A healthy networked organization has certain qualities. How healthy is your organization? Learn about the shifts needed to develop a robust\, productive networked organization.\nCommunication in the Networked World. Communication worked differently before organizations were networked. Now that they are\, you need to understand networks and the tricks to accelerating change within them.\nUsing Network Maps to Strengthen Communication. Network maps provide a snapshot of how information flows within an organization. We’ll look at a map collectively and learn how to interpret it and use the findings to fine-tune a communication initiative.\n\nJoin me at this online conference!
