SUMMARY:Stuck in your point of view? Let’s talk!
DESCRIPTION:In our current environment\, characterized by oppositional discourse\, it is useful to pause and explore the human tendency to dismiss conflicting points of views and get “stuck” in our own point of view. In this highly experiential workshop\, we work with the notions of neutrality\, equanimity\, polarities\, and role theory\, drawn from the Lewis Method of Deep Democracy\, to explore how to listen to viewpoints that are radically different from our own. Participants will be introduced to effective approaches for working with divisive issues that have the potential to fracture a group and undermine effective leadership. \nPresenters: Martha Miser\, Lauren Powers\, Maya Townsend\, Ipek Utun \nDetails: Coming soon

SUMMARY:Deep Democracy Group Practice for Facilitators
DESCRIPTION:Invest in your Deep Democracy skills through this four-part\, small group practice and coaching series. We will build on the Deep Democracy Foundations course. During four 90-minute sessions\, you will: \n\nPractice and refine the skills learned in the Deep Democracy Foundations course\nReceive feedback on Deep Democracy techniques\nLearn new Deep Democracy tools that enhance facilitator effectiveness\nIntegrate Deep Democracy techniques into your existing practice\n\nFeedback from Past Participants \n“I am so glad that I took the Practice and Coaching sessions. These sessions were important to solidifying the learning offered in the Level 1 course. The only way to learn facilitation skills is to practice and practice some more and getting to do that in a small group… gave me more confidence in implementing the techniques.” – Lisa Negsted\, Negsted Consulting\, Minnesota \n“The sessions after the training were a really great opportunity to revisit what we had learnt in a safe and supportive space. We could show up with our doubts and insecurities knowing we would have a chance to practise and connect more deeply with our colleagues. It was very useful\, fun and touching. I look forward to more!” – Roxane Loiseaux\, Questhills LTD\, UK \nCourse Length: Four 90-minute sessions.\nDates: TBD based on participant availability \nSign up now!

SUMMARY:What If We Loved Conflict?: How Deep Democracy Invites Healthy Conflict At Work
DESCRIPTION:The idea that every consulting project will go smoothly\, without a bit of conflict\, is a lovely dream. But it’s just that: a dream. Whenever people come together to share opinions\, design something\, or implement a plan\, we inevitably run into differences in perspectives\, values\, priorities\, worldviews\, and so on. These differences\, especially if they revolve around an important issue for us\, generate conflict. Our patterns of dealing with conflict in unhealthy\, non-generative ways compel us to envision a “no-conflict” environment. However\, what if we learned how to work with conflict in ways that are energizing\, inspiring\, and creative? What if we learned that conflict could bring more wisdom to our meeting\, projects\, and relationships? \nIn this session\, we will introduce participants to Deep Democracy\, a methodology created in South Africa to help organizations recover from the trauma of apartheid and develop equitable organizations and healthy relations. We will learn about the principles of Deep Democracy\, experience a core Deep Democracy tool\, and together explore a critical question: is it possible to love conflict? \nBIOS \nIpek Utun \n \nHer passion is to contribute to a world where people dare and commit to live and lead with their full potential\, with love and strength. Ipek is an ICF-certified PCC level Coach\, ORSCC Certified Relationship and Systems Coach\, Certified Shadow Work Group Facilitator and Personal Coach\, and Certified Deep Democracy Facilitator\, Trainer\, and Elder. She has extensive experience in coaching and training C-level executives\, senior leadership teams\, women leadership groups as well as facilitating small to big group processes which hold an emotional charge\, polarization\, and divisiveness. Ipek’s differentiating edge is her capacity to work with the deeper patterns driving complex situations and enabling personal or systemic transformation. \nMaya Townsend \n \nShe brings diverse groups together to tackle complex\, systemic challenges. She works with corporations\, community groups\, and nonprofits to help identify strategies\, mobilize networks\, lead change\, and resolve conflict. Co-editor of Handbook for Strategic HR (AMACOM)\, her writing on networks\, change leadership\, and business ecosystems has appeared in strategy+business\, People & Strategy\, Nonprofit Quarterly\, and other publications. The hands-on\, practice-based 2.5-day online course teaches techniques that can be applied immediately to work with groups and individuals. \nThe Lewis Method of Deep Democracy was developed by Myrna and Greg Lewis\, psychologists who were asked to help a large South African company work through the legacy of apartheid. (Greg passed away several years ago.) \nThe Lewis Method of Deep Democracy welcomes differences in opinion\, perspective\, and style. It provides structured\, focused methods for helping people hear the messages in the communication\, regardless of the method of delivery\, and explore differences in ways that are productive and respectful. SUMMARY:An Introduction to Deep Democracy: A New View into Resistance and Conflict
DESCRIPTION:As facilitators\, our job is to help diverse groups come together\, negotiate differences\, and craft solutions that stick. Too often\, however\, group members nod their heads\, but don’t really agree. Their concerns go under the surface. Occasionally\, these concerns become conflicts so large that they threaten to divide a team or undermine a project. In order to achieve real commitment—and to create spaces in which people can disagree and share divergent perspectives safely—we need new methods and tools. \nIn this session\, participants learn about the Lewis Method of Deep Democracy\, which was developed in South Africa after the fall of apartheid to help organizations recover from the legacy of racism. We will share three Deep Democracy tools: a facilitator-friendly method for surfacing differences in a group\, a tool for diagnosing resistance\, and a method for working with conflict. \nAfterwards\, if time permits\, we may have time for open discussion and networking. \nLearning Objectives\nIn this session\, participants will: \n\nLearn how a Conversation in Motion can surface perspectives and uncover hidden issues\nUse the Resistance Line to identify and diagnose hidden resistance\nPractice the Debate tool for leading a group safely through a conflict\n\nSpeakers\nMaya Townsend brings diverse groups together to tackle complex\, systemic challenges. SUMMARY:Change\, Undone: How to Work with Top Leaders to Make Change Stick - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:The change is great\, the change is amazing… and then the change is canceled. Gutted. Undone. It’s a situation that happens far too often. Many times\, the cause for calling a halt is executive leadership. They may cite a change in strategy\, a shift in priorities\, or a response to environmental conditions\, but the underlying reality is constant: they didn’t believe in the change in the first place. \nIn this session\, we examine how practitioners can work with sponsors and company executives to prevent change from becoming undone. We investigate the forces that cause top leaders to push back and explore a reality-based method of working with the inevitable trade-offs involved in change. Participants leave with a clearer plan for how to work with executives to support their initiatives.

SUMMARY:Need Resilience? Look to Your Networks
DESCRIPTION:One constant throughout tumultuous 2020 has been change. Organizations have been faced with unprecedented challenges that have forced them to rethink\, retrench\, rejigger\, and revitalize. One more “re” word has been necessary: resilience. The traumas of the past year have wounded individuals and organizations and made even more evident the need for resiliency. \nIn this session\, we will focus on where resiliency lives in organizations: in their networks. Networks are the webs of informal relationships that people create in order to complete routine work\, make decisions\, solve problems\, and respond to changing conditions. They are more flexible and agile than organizational hierarchies and better prepared to respond to change. We will discuss how participants can leverage the power of networks to support strategy formulation and implementation.

SUMMARY:Deep Democracy: First Aid for Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Disagreements often are avoided or swept under the rug in organizations. Occasionally\, disagreements become conflicts so large that they threaten to divide a team\, create a toxic working environment\, or undermine a project. \nConflict doesn’t have to be destructive. It is both common and inevitable. With skill and awareness\, we can use conflict to develop deeper understandings\, uncover unexamined assumptions\, and reveal hidden wisdom. \nIn this session\, we will introduce participants to First Aid for Polarization. This technique\, an outgrowth of the Deep Democracy method\, allows people to engage in one-on-one conversations about tensions\, differences of opinion\, and divisive issues—political or work-related. We will learn the method and then practice it. Participants will leave with the ability to engage in First Aid for Conflict with the people in their lives as well as with work colleagues and clients. \nTakeaways \n\nUnderstanding of the Resistance Line\, a tool for diagnosing conflict\nAbility to lower the waterline and identify underlying dynamics contributing to conflict\nPractice using the First Aid for Conflict method to engage in 1:1 conversations about differences of opinion\, disagreements\, and divisive conflicts\n\nFacilitators: Maya Townsend and Lauren Powers

SUMMARY:Stop Fighting Fires\, Start Shifting Patterns: Using Network Knowledge to Shape Change
DESCRIPTION:The ONA Summit is a unique opportunity to learn from international thought leaders about how networks of trust and data-driven insights can help you accelerate transformation across your organization. This pandemic has significantly challenged your organization\, teams\, work culture\, and workflows. Trust plays a key role in how your organization adapts to the “new normal” and how the crisis will affect the engagement and productivity of your people. \nHowever\, building and strengthening trusting relationships among your employees has never been more important than now. Use this interactive opportunity to learn how to navigate the uncertainties and nurture a productive and constructive organization – one that will continue to provide value and have a positive social impact on the world. \nPartnering Resources founder Maya Townsend will present “Stop Fighting Fires\, Start Shifting Patterns: Using Network Knowledge to Shape Change.” The session will ask: \n\nHow can we see beyond events to the network patterns that influence change?\nHow can we use network knowledge to influence change more effectively?\n\nThe session will be followed by a panel discussion in which Maya and other presenters will discuss how to use networks to support change.

SUMMARY:A New View into Change Leadership: Leveraging the Power of Networks
DESCRIPTION:More information coming soon!\n \nLeaders intuitively know that informal influencers can help make or break a change effort. However\, the change management profession doesn’t yet have a clearly articulated\, well-practiced methodology for identifying influencers or using network strategies to support change. In this technology-powered workshop\, we build network intelligence while learning a simple tool for mapping and analyzing organizational networks and influencers. \nThis workshop covers two topics: \n\nChange in the Networked World. Change worked differently before organizations were deeply networked. Now that they are\, you need to understand networks and the tricks to accelerating change within them.\nUnlocking the Wisdom in Network Maps to Support Change. Network maps provide a snapshot of how information flows within an organization. We’ll look at a map collectively and learn how to interpret it and use the findings to fine-tune a change initiative.\n\nJoin me online for this on-demand session!

SUMMARY:Our Organizations are Networks: Why Don't We Use Them for Communication and Leadership?
DESCRIPTION:Now an online event! \nAlmost every organization now relies on communication networks to share information and mobilize collective action. Yet leaders rarely take a thoughtful\, planful approach to leveraging networks. In this workshop\, we will learn how to use networks to support effective communication and change. \nThis workshop covers three topics: \n\nThe Networked Organization. A healthy networked organization has certain qualities. How healthy is your organization? Learn about the shifts needed to develop a robust\, productive networked organization.\nCommunication in the Networked World. Communication worked differently before organizations were networked. Now that they are\, you need to understand networks and the tricks to accelerating change within them.\nUsing Network Maps to Strengthen Communication. SUMMARY:When Conflict Overwhelms Change: What To Do When Groups Get Stuck
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nConflict is inevitable. And conflicts in today’s organizations\, in which people are expected to change so quickly\, are even more common. Unfortunately\, often conflict in organizations is avoided or swept under the rug. Occasionally\, a conflict becomes so large that it threatens to rip apart a team\, create an unpleasant working environment\, or reduce productivity. \nBut it doesn’t have to be destructive. Within conflict\, there is often very important information seeking expression. A change leader’s ability to allow that information to emerge and successfully navigate through conflict is the gateway to the success of teams\, change initiatives\, and organizations. \nIn this interactive session\, participants gain exposure to and experience with a technique that they can use with groups facing conflict. Participants will learn how to use the technique to help people talk respectfully and productively about conflict. \nMaya Townsend\nFounder / Lead Consultant\, Partnering Resources \n\nMaya Townsend\, founder and lead consultant at Partnering Resources\, helps individuals\, teams\, and organizations thrive in our networked world. She uses knowledge of the art and science of networks to help leaders create a resilient strategy\, find opportunities in complex business ecosystems\, and influence change. Her clients include Fortune 500\, mid-sized\, emerging\, and nonprofit organizations\, such as Bayer\, Biogen Idec\, Commongood Careers\, Intel\, Merrimack Pharmaceuticals\, MIT\, and the National Braille Press. Maya is co-editor of Handbook for Strategic HR: Best Practices in Organization Development from the OD Network (AMACOM\, 11/2012). Her articles have been published in CIO\, Nonprofit Quarterly\, Talent Management\, and other outlets. She is a former blogger for Inc\, American Management Association\, and Future of Work Enabled. Maya’s company blog (https://partneringresources.com/blog) was recognized as “Best of the Best” by Alltop.\nKeli Trejo\nSenior Associate\, Partnering Resources \n \nKeli builds client awareness around how work gets done—and leads the way toward a better future. SUMMARY:Boston CoResolve: Introduction to Deep Democracy for Leaders
DESCRIPTION:Over the past couple of years\, I’ve been learning an exciting new method for conflict resolution called the Lewis Method of Deep Democracy. Developed in South Africa to help people work through the aftermath of apartheid\, it allows people to dive into conflict in a safe\, “real” way. This approach is really powerful – it works for leaders seeking to help their organization work through tough issues and consultants who want to add a powerful conflict-resolution tool to their portfolio. I love this methodology! \nIn April\, Aduro Consulting is co-sponsoring (with Essential Partners) a two-day workshop in Boston and I’m inviting you to attend. This CoResolve workshop is the foundational course in the Deep Democracy series. It provides the theory\, instruction\, and practice you’ll need to begin using the most powerful and essential tools of Deep Democracy in your leadership. \nHere’s the information: \n\nThe Boston CoResolve Workshop is scheduled for April 11-12.\nThe workshop will be held at the Brookline Courtyard Marriott and will run from 9:00-4:30 on both days.\nFor registration information\, click here.\nTo learn more about the workshop or download a pdf of the event brochure here.

SUMMARY:How Successful Do You Plan to be in 2019?
DESCRIPTION:A workshop experience weaving connections to enrich your life\, livelihood\, and community.\nThe Wimberley Valley is known far and wide for what people ‘experience’ here.  \nThese experiences strengthen relationships between us as neighbors and make us resilient as a community.  In addition\, they provide fun\, food\, and fellowships for folks who visit and support the local economy. \nYet how do all these many things happen?  It’s the creative brew\, our secret sauce\, that makes it so.  We have so many creative people\,  diverse resources\, and a natural inclination to bring new experiences into being.  We have an invisible web of connections that link ideas\, opportunities\, needs\, and resources. \n\n\n\n\nWhat would be possible\, that’s not possible now\, if we could ‘see’ these connections?\n\n\n\n\nAt this workshop\, with our Guide Maya Townsend\, we’ll map our connections to illuminate what’s hidden in the Valley’s Creative Brew.

SUMMARY:Is Your Strategy Stuck in the 20th Century?: Rethinking Our Assumptions about What Makes Organizations Thrive
DESCRIPTION:Today\, the world is a much different place than it was twenty years ago. Yet\, in OD and the organizational world\, we still rely on strategies that were developed in the 20th century (and a few that were developed over 2000 years ago). We’ll explore new pathways towards helping organizations thrive. \nParticipants will leave with increased clarity about: \n\nHow their work is tied to the five common assumptions about strategy;\nHow disrupting some of those assumptions might benefit their work and their organizations; and\nWhat alternatives exist to the five assumptions and how to integrate them into their practices.\n\nFee\nOD Network Members: $15\nNon-Members: $25 \nMaya Townsend helps individuals\, teams\, and organizations thrive in our networked world. Her articles are regularly published by venues such as Inc.com\, CIO.Com\, People + Strategy\, and Nonprofit Quarterly. Co-editor of The Handbook for Strategic HR\, Maya will happily tell you why you should throw out your performance reviews and why most HR departments need a total makeover. \nMartha Miser focuses on disrupting organizations\, so that people think differently about themselves and their relationships\, leading to client organizations that are more awake\, more passionate\, more human and more focused – all of which adds up to better business results.
