Through her company\, Partnering Resources\, she uses the science underlying human relationships to make soft skills generate hard results. Maya serves on the Editorial Review Board for OD Practitioner. Her articles are regularly published by venues such as Inc.Com\, CIO.Com\, People + Strategy\, and Nonprofit Quarterly. Co-editor of The Handbook for Strategic HR\, Maya will happily tell you why you should throw out your performance reviews and why most HR departments need a total makeover.\n\n  \n Martha Miser\, focuses on disrupting organizations\, so that people think differently about themselves and relationships\, leading to organizations that are more awake\, passionate\, human and focused – all of which adds up to better business results. SUMMARY:Spreading Like Fire: Using Networks to Streamline and Accelerate Change Communication
DESCRIPTION:The IABC World Conference is a global professional development event designed for communication practitioners. Our theme for the upcoming IABC World Conference\, 11-14 June 2017\, is GLOBAL BUSINESS: Lead Communication\, Make Real Impact. \nIn this presentation\, learn why large-scale change is notoriously difficult to achieve. Well-designed\, seamlessly executed change communications are a critical driver. However\, it’s difficult to send consistent messages and maintain momentum over the long haul. Luckily\, organizations have a hidden asset that can be used to support change. \n\nEvery organization consists of webs of relationships: connections people instinctively create in order to solve problems\, share information\, and get things done. Five to fifteen percent of these people are Critical Connectors—people with disproportionate influence over the whole. Once communication professionals identify Critical Connectors\, they can position them and engage with them in ways that can streamline activity and accelerate communication throughout the whole organization. This workshop will introduce participants to network analysis and help participants understand how they can start leveraging Critical Connectors today. \nIn this session\, you’ll learn:[unordered_list style=”bullet”] \n\n5–15% of people in any network have disproportionate influence.\nCritical Connectors include SMEs\, influencers\, informal leaders\, and communicators.\nBy tapping Critical Connectors\, communications professionals can streamline change communication.\nHow one company used network analysis to develop targeted\, resource-efficient communications.\n\n[/unordered_list] \nJoin us in Washington\, DC for this engaging\, participatory workshop!

SUMMARY:The Next Frontier in Change Management: Using Network Analysis to Find Influencers\, Populate Change Teams\, and Create Social Systems that Support Change
DESCRIPTION:Behind organization charts and process maps are relationships. People instinctively form relationships on every job in order to solve problems\, imagine new approaches\, make decisions\, access expertise\, and complete daily work. These relationships comprise organizational networks\, powerful but often overlooked vehicles for change. \nIn this presentation at the 2017 Association of Change Management Professionals conference\, participants will learn how network knowledge can help accelerate success and build support for change. We will discuss how thoughtful use of Critical Connectors—the 5 – 15% of individuals who have disproportionate influence over the network as a whole—can help change management professionals populate teams\, build social support\, and integrate respected change advocates into the organization. \nWe will discuss three case studies. The presenter will share how a large city agency used networks to identify influencers and how Bayer CropScience used networks to prioritize change leadership agendas. Then participants will engage in their choice of two case studies and explore how they would use network information to support change management in their chosen situation. We will close with Q&A and discussion of next steps. \nMissed the session? Check out the ACMP Next Frontier Slides.

SUMMARY:Lessons from Mapping the Nonprofit Talent Ecosystem: Finding the Talent You Need
DESCRIPTION:Nonprofits struggle to find the talent they need. It can feel like an isolated problem\, but there are larger forces affecting the influx and recruitment of talent in the nonprofit sector. Ecosystem mapping offers a way to see the whole system and find leverage points for change. It’s an easy-to-learn\, participatory method of building a holistic picture of a system that can then be used for analysis and discovery. In this workshop\, participants learn the basics of ecosystem mapping and apply the method in order to understand the challenges affecting talent in the nonprofit sector. Through an experiential activity\, we will explore the nonprofit talent ecosystem and gain new insights into potential levers to pull in order to affect change. \nFor conference information\, see: \nhttp://massnonprofitnet.org/training-and-events/annual-conference/

SUMMARY:Navigating Global Complexity: How Bayer Used Organization Network Analysis to Build a Connected\, Collaborative Organization
DESCRIPTION:Complexity is increasing. Leaders struggle to bring alignment and focus among the intricate interconnections\, profound diversity\, and local demands pulling on staff around the globe. Organizations require new tools to realize the true benefits of globalization\, collaboration\, and shared resources. \nOne such tool is organization network analysis (ONA). Based on a case study with a client seeking to become a global organization\, this session will help OD practitioners understand how what it takes to become an effective networked leader and manage the complexity of dispersed individuals and teams. Through experiential activities designed to encourage network thinking\, participants will rethink how leaders design\, shape\, and nurture talent within a global network. \nSpecifically\, participants will learn: \n\nThe value of using ONA to build connection and collaboration across global organizations.\nHow to increase organizations’ potential to recognize those actually doing the work well\, not just those who fit cultural expectations and who have leadership exposure.\nThrough a case study\, demonstrate how leaders can transform from transactional leaders to networked leaders in a global organization.\nHow network maps can be used to help coach leaders and better engage virtual team members.\n\nPresented with Kittie Watson of Innolect\, Inc. and Lisa Coen\, former public affairs leader at Bayer CropScience.

SUMMARY:The Art and Science of Networking: Workshop and Mixer
DESCRIPTION:Does networking really make a difference? The answer is a resounding yes!\nIn a study performed by Partnering Resources\, 93% of completely successful change initiatives were led by leaders with very strong or strong personal networks. Not one change initiatives described as less successful was led by a leader with strong or very strong personal networks. Furthermore\, a recent study featured in Sloan Management Review showed that high performing project teams had almost twice as many non-core contributors affiliated with the team. \nIn this highly interactive session\, we learn about the science behind networking. We draw on insights from researchers and practitioners in the social sciences and in business to learn about the networking practices of high performers. We dispel the myth that people who want strong networks should never eat alone and\, instead\, we learn about the simple actions that significantly contribute to the health of your network. \nWe also practice the art of networking so participants will leave with better connections and increased knowledge about what the network in the room can offer. We merge the art and science by mapping individual participants’ networks\, identify gaps\, and develop plans for filling those gaps. \nParticipants Take Away:\n[unordered_list style=”tick”] \n\nIncreased understanding of the science behind networking\nPreliminary strategic analysis of their own networks\nIdentification of the gaps in their personal networks and ideas about how to fill those gaps\nReal-time advising from peers about on-the-job challenges[/unordered_list]\n\nThis event will be led by Partnering Resources associate Keli Trejo\n\nPricing\n\nMembers: $30\nNon-Members: $65\n** All registrations include appetizers and drinks in the networking practice.** \n[button link=”https://secure.acceptiva.com/?cst=fbd576″]Register Here[/button]

SUMMARY:Navigating Complex Business Ecosystems at the Strategic Execution Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Stanford Advanced Project Management (SAPM) program is excited to announce The 2014 Strategic Execution Conference\, the world’s leading event focused on improving the way you execute your strategy. Leaders from the world’s most innovative companies will learn how their peers are: \n\nOvercoming barriers to strategic execution\nAligning strategy to execution and resources\nFocusing projects to support their strategy\nAccelerating Successful Innovation\nEnsuring metrics-driven decisions\n\nPartnering Resources founder Maya Townsend is presenting “Navigating Complex Business Ecosystems: New Tools for Our Increasingly Complex\, Volatile Markets” at the conference: \nCompanies work in complex\,overlapping\,constantly changing environments.Today’s customer landscape is not tomorrow’s.Yesterday’s competitor is today’s partner. And who knows what the economy will do in the future? Companies need to continue producing and performing amidst these changes. Creative companies even find opportunities amidst the tumult. \nSeeing and navigating ecosystems requires different tools and skills than most people learn on the job. In this engaging\, fast‐paced session\, participants learn how to make the shift to ecosystem thinking. We review a case study from a technology company that faced serious ecosystem challenges; discuss strategic options based on the case; and engage in discussions about applications to participant ecosystems. Participants leave with ideas on how to bring ecosystem thinking into strategy ideation and planning. \n

SUMMARY:Business Ecosystem Mapping & Analysis Workshop - Portland\, OR
DESCRIPTION:Sold out! To schedule a workshop in your area\, contact maya@partneringresources.com. \nBusiness Ecosystem Model developed by Dr. James F. Moore\nBusiness ecosystems are dynamic webs of interdependent organizations and entities that rely on each other for success. \nBusiness ecosystems are complex and ever-changing. New entities enter\, some take on different roles\, and others exit. Despite the complexity\, we can create ecosystem maps that help us increase our understanding of the whole\, identify how value is created\, understand power dynamics and assess players\, learn where and how the system breaks down\, and make smarter decisions about collaboration and problem solving. \nNot restricted to corporations\, “business ecosystem” can describe any complex\, human-based ecosystem\, such as the Austin adolescent health care system\, grassroots Brazilian music movement\, or Columbia Basin salmon recovery initiative. \nBusiness Ecosystem Mapping & Analysis is an interactive\, engaging program that provides a concrete\, in-depth experience with business ecosystem mapping and analysis. By the end of the program\, participants will be able to facilitate ecosystem mapping and analysis sessions with stakeholder groups. \nThis workshop is hosted by Oregon Consensus.

SUMMARY:Energy Action Network (Vermont): Enabling Fragmented Parts of a System to Collaborate Toward a Bold Shared Goal
DESCRIPTION:In a field where divergent forces often work against each other\, the Energy Action Network (EAN) of Vermont\, supports over 70 non-profit\, business and government leaders in working together toward to the goal of providing 90% of Vermont’s 2050 energy needs from renewable energy and energy efficiency. Join us at the December gathering of the Leadership Learning Community’s Boston Learning Circle to learn about how EAN created a process to engage leaders across the state and develop a collaborative network focused on large scale system change.\nWe’ll hear the story from two experienced “network weavers” who have been deeply involved in the process: \n\nJennifer Berman\, formerly the Executive Director of Maverick Lloyd Foundation\, the founding funder\, will share how EAN used systems mapping and convenings to build trust\, and agreement on common goals and commitment to joint action.\nAndi Colnes\, Executive Director of EAN\, will share how a collaborative network structure was created and how it works\, as well as the successes and challenges EAN has experienced along the way.\n\nThe EAN story will serve as the spring board for conversations exploring leadership skills and processes for enabling diverse organizations to align their work for greater impact\, including: \n\nWhat it takes to get people fragmented parts of a system to the table and create alignment around a vision\nHow to create the context for “a-ha” moments that enable people to work together in new ways\n\nHow to cultivate shared leadership in a decentralized structure where people can own the work and move forward with it\nHow to use a network to add value and deliver outcomes and action\n\n\n\nBeth Tener\, Principal of New Directions Collaborative and Maya Townsend of Partnering Resources will help facilitate this gathering.

SUMMARY:Networked Organizations: Assessing Business Ecosystems and Helping Organizations Find Opportunities in Our Complex World
DESCRIPTION:Companies work in complex\, overlapping\, constantly changing environments. Today’s customer landscape is not tomorrow’s. And who knows what the economy will do? Yet companies need to produce and perform consistently amidst these changes. Creative companies find opportunities in their ecosystems amidst the tumult. \nBusiness ecosystems are dynamic webs of interdependent organizations that rely on each other for success. The inventor of the term\, James F. Moore\, explains that business ecosystems include those we’ve always considered to be part of a corporation such as those inside the organization’s walls. But ecosystems include more than just staff and customers. They also those who can significantly influence the business but who are often considered pesky outsiders like trade associations and competitors. Forming usable (not overwhelming\, but rich enough to be helpful) mental pictures of how these entities interconnect is difficult. Finding opportunities and taking action based on those pictures is even more difficult. \nIn this session\, participants learn methods that can help OD consultants and their clients navigate their strategic landscape. Participants learn about a simple\, yet robust\, methodology for mapping business ecosystems and finding opportunities within them.

SUMMARY:Art of Hosting: Tools for Facilitating Conversations that Matter
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Hosting is a response to a world that is becoming increasingly complex and fragmented\, where true solutions and innovation lie not in one leader or one viewpoint\, but instead arise from our collective intelligence. An emerging set of tools and world-wide learning community through the Art of Hosting offer new ways of hosting and designing meetings and conversations that access the wisdom of a group in more powerful ways. \nThe Art of Hosting is a practice ground for all who aspire to bring out the best in others. It is based on the assumption and experience that human beings have enormous untapped wealth and resilience and that the sustainable solutions lie in the wisdom between us.[1]  The Art of Hosting can help us all lead change through dialogue\, learning and action. \nWe are convening Boston area funders\, practitioners\, consultants\, evaluators\, and community members to experience several Art of Hosting practices. Specifically\, participants will have an opportunity to learn about and experience five tools: Open Space\, Pro Action Café\, World Café\, Revealed Presence Cards\, and Harvesting. You will leave with practical tools and techniques that you can use in your work\, as well as insights about collective leadership that emerge from the conversations. \nPlease join us in this gathering of the Boston Leadership Learning Circle as we explore how Art of Hosting practices can engage stakeholders and convene people in order to create new collective intelligence\, take wise actions and create sustainable solutions. \nOur catalyst for the event is Madeline Snow\, who works in the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production at UMass Lowell\, helping public sector entities improve their sustainability and energy management \nBeth Tener\, Principal of New Directions Collaborative\, and Maya Townsend of Partnering Resources will help facilitate this gathering.  Madeline and Beth are part of the Collective Leadership Network. \n[1] AoH Hosting Team\, Awareness Day\, Zagreb\, 2009.

SUMMARY:Six Strategies for Making Change Stick (Hint: Connections Matter)
DESCRIPTION:Leaders of middle-market companies face lofty challenges: how to sustain growth\, how to lead significant change\, how to capture ideas and turn them into competitive wins. You can’t tackle these alone. At Build’s high-impact\, day-long event you will huddle with fellow leaders of middle market companies for an insider perspective on challenges … and road-tested solutions. Expect unparalleled networking\, highly interactive sessions\, key actionable takeaways\, and an afternoon cocktail party! \nMaya Townsend of Partnering Resources will present on Six Strategies for Making Change Stick (HINT: Connections Matter!): \nChallenge: To get better\, we have to evolve — but only 38% of leaders say their change efforts have actually improved performance. Why is it so tough to win buy-in and make change stick? \nSolution: Change by dictum doesn’t work. The only thing that does: connections\, and lots of them. Studies show that effective change makers simultaneously employ these six strategies for building the individual\, social\, and structural connections that make transformation excite — and\, therefore\, take hold within — an organization.

SUMMARY:Process Improvement for the New Millennium: Introduction to Value Network Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Business processes are more complex than ever before. Project Managers need to understand them well in order to write requirements\, design solutions\, and make improvements. Yet\, rapidly changing\, exception-based\, complex processes stymie traditional process mapping efforts. The Value Network Analysis (VNA) methodology is well suited to showing how processes produce value. Sometimes considered the ideal process mapping tool for the complexity era\, VNA excels at identifying and analyzing non-linear\, dynamic processes. VNA also effectively maps business ecosystems: a dynamic structure of interconnected organizations that depend on each other for mutual survival. \nIn this workshop\, featured at the 2013 Professional Development Day sponsored by the Project Management Institute Massachusetts Bay Chapter\, participants will learn: \n\nWhy processes should be thought of as networks\nThe gaps and challenges with traditional business process mapping\nHow VNA methodology can help simplify and enrich business process improvement\nThe basic components of a VNA map\nIdeas to enhance future process improvement and mapping efforts\n\nUPDATE: This session will be presented by Partnering Resources Associate Cheryl Coonahan.

SUMMARY:Strategic Questioning and the Art of Network Leadership
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the publication of The Leadership Learning Community’s Leadership & Networks: New Ways of Developing Leadership in a Highly Connected World\, we are convening Boston area funders\, practitioners\, and evaluators to explore what it means to lead with a network mindset. \nLeading with a network mindset requires skills in creating spaces and conditions that enable diverse groups to find common purpose and come together in ways where diversity enables new possibilities to emerge. We often view leaders as having the answers\, yet in networks\, effective leadership requires the ability to frame the right questions  questions that inspire\, focus\, and catalyze the power of a group and the individuals within it. \nPlease join us this gathering of the Boston Leadership Learning Community as we explore Strategic Questioning\, a technique of framing open questions that inspire movement\, reflection\, and enable people to discover new options and alternatives. Beth Tener\, Principal of New Directions Collaborative\, will provide a brief primer on strategic questioning and how it can be used in facilitating and convening networks. Then participants will practice using strategic questions in the context of their real-life challenges in leading networks\, in a live case-study process and small groups. Maya Townsend of Partnering Resources will help facilitate this gathering. \nYou will come away with many new strategic questions to inform your work in network leadership and new tools for leading with a network mindset. \nNOTE: Coffee\, water\, bagels & fresh fruit will be provided

SUMMARY:Illuminating the Invisible: Mapping Austin's Adolescent Health System Using Value Network Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Mapping Austin’s Adolescent Health System Using Value Network Analysis\nThis workshop provides a case study of how we used Value Network Analysis to map Austin’s adolescent health system. We walk participants through the process and teach the basics of how to use this exciting\, new technique for visualizing complex systems and mapping ecosystems. This case study was featured in Nonprofit Quarterly. \nPresented with Stephanie Nestlerode of Omega Point International and Nikki Trevino of the Austin / Travis County Department of Health and Human Services. \nUPDATE: Thanks to all who attended! We had a great session. Here’s what participants had to say: \n\nVery well done. It was a lot of complex information presented with visuals (and jokes) that allowed me to really leave here with a tangible understanding. \nGreat blend of process and content. Valuable tool and approach. Well done.\nVery interesting and engaging.\nAwesome!

SUMMARY:Networked Leadership: A Systematic\, Strategic Method for Helping Clients (and You!) Build\, Sustain\, and Benefit from Networks
DESCRIPTION:Networks make a difference. But many don’t understand how to nurture their networks in order to gain results. Additionally\, people can become overwhelmed by the size of their networks and the many ways available to connect with their contacts. \nThis session moves beyond anecdote and guesswork to the science behind networking. We draw on insights from researchers and practitioners in the social sciences to learn about the networking practices of high performers. We dispel the myth that people who want strong networks should never eat alone and\, instead\, we learn about the simple actions that significantly contribute to network health. We learn simple network inventory and assessment tools that coaches and consultants can use with their clients to help them manage their networks. Participants will leave with tools and techniques to help them\, and their clients\, build networks in a smart\, strategic way.

SUMMARY:Art & Science of Networking for Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy
DESCRIPTION:Does networking really make a difference? The answer is a resounding yes! In a study performed by Partnering Resources\, 93% of completely successful change initiatives were led by leaders with very strong or strong personal networks. Not one change initiatives described as less successful was led by a leader with strong or very strong personal networks.
